mess free oil change??
OK.. Having changed the oil today in my 2 Disco's.. I have to ask...
Is there a way to change the oil without making a mess? After many - many oil changes, I still can't seem to do it without making a mess....
Anyone have any tricks?

I have seen those before sold by Fram. Not sure how I feel about it though.
I just change my oil in the neighbors driveway.
I put down oil only PigMat and just go nice and slow, I have found that if you run the passenger side of the truck up on your ramps the oil drains at a better angle and it puts all the u-joints up high enough for you to grease them all.

I had a drain plug similar to the one UP posted in my Dodge diesel. That was one of the best things I ever added to the truck. The one I used was a ball valve style that just required a 1/4 turn to open and drain. It even had a retaining clip to prevent the valve from opening by getting caught on something off road but I never used it since my Dodge sat so high.
This is the one I used and I highly recommend.

I am worried about those drain plugs getting hit while off road though...
I think the biggest reason for a mess is that oil splashes out of the catch pan.. maybe I should find a different style (i use a 15 qt from Autozone)

mattrickman, I think you are probably right about the catch basis configuration being the issue.... I have two... one from the zone, one from shucks.
auto zone (rectangular - 16 qt) has a 'dome' in the middle to direct the oil to the drain, but in reality, just spills over the side first. (read - sucks).
The Schucks one is round and all funnels to the center to drain. Works great and doesn't spill a drop. link for the good one

Hope this helps.

My oil drain pan is a 8 quart, been using the same one for 15 years.
I have gotten pretty good at figuring out where the stream will hit, then move the pan to account for the slow stream.
I think that one of those quick drain plugs would allow debris to sit in the bottom of the oil pan and not come out with the old oil.
