Default Accelerator Pedal Sticking

New to the site so I apologize if this has been posted previously. I own a '99 Disco that's been sitting for a bit. Started it, went to depress the accelerator pedal, found it to be a bit stiff, then suddenly throttle went wide open and pedal stuck. Had to get my foot under it and pull it up to bring it back down to idle. Does it every time I step on the accelerator pedal. Any suggestions? I'm a new Land Rover owner and other than doing plugs/fluids/filters pretty much a mechanical novice. Thanks in advance.

The throttle body has linkage that is operated by the pedal, I'd start with lube in that area. If you have the air hose off from the throttle body, you can see the butterfly valve that is operated by the gas pedal, which actually does not change the gas, it changes the the quantity of air passing by.

What Buzz said, clean the throttle plate, clean the linkage and then lube with silicone spray.

You might also want to check the return spring.. Sounds like it might have broken.. I'm betting that's your problem since you can lift the pedal with your foot and quiet things down..

Clean the throttle body. I had the same problem on an Xterra, good cleaning with Gummout made it go away.

Thanks for all the quick responses. Thinking it's the throttle body because the pedal returns just fine when not running. Haven't had a chance to work on it yet. I'll let you know how it turns out.

If there is a lot of build up inside the throttle body, it could be from oil fumes that get slurped in through the PCV system, and that will need some cleanout as well. The PCV has hoses on both valve covers, one heads into intake, the other into throttle body. If the PCV is plugged on the passenger side it could suck in thru the driver side. Be sure to clean out the bore the hose fits into on the throttle body.

You guys called it. It was the throttle body. Just got done giving it a good cleaning. Gotta love when an aerosol can provides the fix. Took a bit of scrubbing with a toothbrush though. Savannah you mentioned cleaning the PCV hoses. What's the best way to do that? In the meantime I'm gonna start working on my leaking alpine windows. Thanks everybody and have a great a weekend.

Carb cleaner, small brush, even some big Q-tips. One of mine that went into the throttle body was gummed up about 100%. So the fumes, instead of being burned off, help to varnish and sludge up the engine. As if it needed any extra help with that.
