Default Accuracy of fuel gauge

I hated every minute of owning my old rover 200 in that there was no fuel light, although it was pretty accurate when it went on the red I knew Id got a good 20miles left

With the disco (95) it merrily works its way down to just about the first marker, then seems to sit there, I havent been brave enough to leave it as im scared it will just jump down to the red and leave me stranded LOL (in the back of my mind the chap I got it off mentioned that some can really inaccurate)

Is it normal for it to sit there a bit at that level, trying to word this without sounding like a loon is there a wider level in the tank that means that last bit seems to last longer

oh well i hope someone gets what Im talking about

Figure out your gas mileage, figure out how big your tank is, multiply the two and fill up before your odometer gets to that number.

Just keep it above the 1/4 tank mark, and if you go on long trips, do as tweakrover mentioned, so you know how far you can possibly go before you run dry. No point in pushing the limit of your fuel pump.

Stay above 1/4 tank, anything lower and your fuel pump will start to heat up/wear out and then you have a big expense.

It hurts less at the gas station if you fill it while still above the 1/2 tank mark.

Ever since I replaced my fuel pump my gauge is off, once I get down to 3/4 of a tank it just sucks the fuel, but when filling from a 1/4 tank it only takes ~15 gals where as it used to take 20+ gals.
My low fuel light used to come on at a needles width below 1/4 tank.
It still comes on at a needles width below a 1/4 but I still have plenty of fuel left.

In conclusion, the fuel gauge is not accurate at all.
