I have been reading pages of forum threads and I am ready to take the plunge. Going to take a look at a 96 D1 and this will be my first Land Rover adventure! Truck has 117k. I was told it runs and trans is in great shape. AC and heat work with no warning lights on dash. Headliner is falling but that seems normal.

THE PROBLEM he says is the TC case. Truck was driving great and then lost power to the wheels. Truck WILL move with the TC locked but does make some noise. Without lock, you can hear spinning but nothing engages and no movement of the truck. Owner says it is definitely the TC.


Transfer case or differentials? Probably get the truck for $600 dollars. What else should I look for and check while I take a look tomorrow?

Probably nothing wrong with transfer case but the linkage. For $600 do you really need to ask since it's cheap enough to fix just about anything and have it still under average price? Buy it, worry about what's not perfect afterwards as long as you have transportation until fixed. At 117k it's barely broke in.

 

Just got back from taking a look.

Rusted inner wing on passenger side looks bad.

Car drives in high and low locked. Both shafts are moving. Will not move if it is not locked it will just sit as if it was in neutral. Owner also said check engine light came on and the car would not go over 10 mph. Also, the tc is covered in oil.
