Default alternator

1996 disco. My alternator appears to be dying. It will work for a couple minutes when I first start it up( it makes a really loud whine), and then the tach stops working and the battery light comes on. I put the multimeter on the alternator where the red wire connects. I got just over 14 volts when it's working but when it quits working, it puts out about 12.5 and the battery voltage drops below 12v.
There is a local rebuild shop that I am going to call tomorrow but I also found one on ebay for $170 that is supposedly 160 amps; does anyone have any experience with this higher amp alternator? any thoughts?

I was going to buy from them a few years ago but got a used alt for free.
Let us know how well it works for you.
To have yours rebuilt will be more than what you can buy one for.

Save your old one.

Try paul Grant. He usually has used very reasonable.

I called my local rebuild shop and they wanted $189 to rebuild it with a one year warranty. The local autozone was around $170 plus core charge for reman with a lifetime warranty.
I went ahead and bought the brand new 160 amp one from ebay.
Ordered it on wednesday and it arrived today, friday.
I'm about to go install it so I will let you all know how it goes.

I'm glad you did not go with the AutoZone alternator, they suck.
I went through 4 in 2 years, finally settled on a used one.
