Keep in mind HID's on a non HID car are illegal.

 

Technically not totally true, but in the case of D1's and DII's, true as far as the end result since there are no legal HID headlamp assemblies that fit.

Ok, let me clarify, putting HID bulbs into a non HID light assembly is illegal.

 

I'll use a proper projector so I'm about as concerned as I was removing CATs and AEL :P

Of course it's personal choice, but don't kid yourself that that makes them legal.

With a projector the beam is cut off correctly just like stock HID setups. If a cop wants to give me trouble I'd ask them to explain the difference between mine and a "legal" setup. Not that it would likely help.

 

Well, if he'd done his homework he could tell you that the lenses are different for HID and halogen headlamps. Also fitting them in to the housing is a very precise "art" and requires specific lighting test equipment to make sure they are correct.
But yeah, mainly it's generally not a good idea to argue with a cop.

 

I argue with them all the time...but it is usually regarding firearm brands and caliber preferences...

HID would be great, but probably the best way to do it legally would be to replace the entire housing with an aftermarket designed for a different vehicle and fab a surround for the housing. That's the only way to do it legally.
That's the nice thing about Series Rovers, Defenders and RRC, they have round headlights so it's easy to be legal with HID or LED.
