alternator problem
Dear experts,
I'm in Saudi Arabia, and I latley bought a good 1997 3.9 Disco.
Aroung a week ago I had the alternator miss charging, I looked for a replacement one, but couldn't find so far.
Is possible that I can use any similar Alternator (the same specs. as the original) or I have to use only an original one?
Waiting for your kind support.

You can get a aftermarket one from a auto parts store, you can look into auto salvage yards.
You have to use one for a Discovery Series I, otherwise it will not fit and the connections will be wrong.
First things first, check and make sure that the fan belt it routed correctly, it is VERY easy for it to be routed wrong but look correct.
Check the "tech section" on the top of the DI page.

Oh my God, is it really possible?
I had both of Fan belt and Alternator changed lately (by a mechanic), and the alt. problems started ever since!!!!!
can I check it myself? is it easy for me? or I have to remove some parts to check the route?

Actually, you can replace your alternator with a one taken from a Volkswagen Jetta VR6.
There are some posts in the internet that can give you a better idea. The problem with that replacement is that you have to modify the legs of the alternator in order to fit the base in the Disco Engine. I you can do that, you can save some bucks because the replacement is about 1/3 the cost of the original Rover alternator.
