Default alternator repair/ replace??

About a year ago I replaced the Alternator on my 97 Disco 1. the lights would pulse at night, Battery would stay charged up OK, just a pulsing or flicker of the lights under load. Replacing the Alternator fixed the problem (tried cleaning contacts and grounds first)

My question is, Is it worth buying parts and repairing the old alternator just to keep it on the shelf for a 'just in case' thing or not?? I would assume it is a diode that is bad or the regulator. I have not had a chance to tear it down or even look into replacement parts. Just wondering if the parts are the same cost as a replacement unit? If it is, I will just toss this and get a replacement (new or used) if I need one. Over the years (and multiple cars) I have replaced maybe 2 or 3 alternators so I don't think it happens as much as in the olden days.

Not my only vehicle so if it was down for a few days, I would drive something else.

It's easy and worth rebuilding the alternator yourself.

Just did one, get the bridge rectifier(ixr543), voltage regulator(ix128), and the 2 bearings. Parts for AMR4247 > http://store.alternatorparts.com/sea...x?find=AMR4247 or find the parts on ebay.

I guess I will go ahead and rebuild it. for now it can sit on the shelf until I get parts for it.
