Default Another silly brake question

Removed the ABS fuse the other day. With that gone i should be able to stomp on the brake and lock em up correct?

if thats the case ive got a problem because they arent. ive got a firm pedal, full vacuum boost. i cant find any leaks. my guess would be air in the system somewhere. any other ideas?

Thanks

Adam

Heavy truck with good tires and they wont lock up unless the road is wet/snow/gravel/etc.

thanks for the replies guys.

i can bottom out the pedal (i'm pretty sure its bottoming out) but it still feels like something just isnt right. i dont really know how to explain it. the pedal is firm but it goes to the floor with effort and even at that point the truck still rolls. maybe thats just the nature of the beast. there is a gravel path on the way home from work, ill run down it and whomp on the brakes an see what happens.

on a side note, do i need one of those C clip looking fitting tools to get the vacuum line for the booster off the intake plenum? or is there a trick to disconnect it from the booster?

thanks

adam

With this better description I am leaning towards what Mike said.
If you can not hold the truck at a stop with the foot brake then you have a problem.

Also consider that your rubber brake lines are old and maybe not providing the pressure build up that you need.
If you have never driven a big heavy truck before it ain't going to stop like a Civic.

hit the gravel on the way home, locks up the font wheels when stomp on it. i thought it would have locked the rears up first. i know that about 2/3 of the brake pressure goes to the front, but i figured with the mass of the truck being thrown forward rears would lock up before the fronts.

i misspoke earlier when i said the pedal goes to the floor. it doesn't. i push it as far as it goes and it wouldnt lock on dry pavement.

the truck does stop, and the more i think about it im coming to the conclusion that its stopping normally, or possibly with the rears not locking on the gravel that the proportioning valve might be sticking.

i drove a 95 tahoe before i picked up larry land rover so im familiar with not stopping on a dime, i guess i just assumed that the disco being "smaller" would stop a little quicker, but then again the thing weighs just about as much as that tahoe.

anyway if i rear end someone ill let ya know.

The Rover has equal brake force distribution, meaning it is supposed to send equal brake pressure to all four wheels.
Does that still work?
I dont know.
So it is not supposed to nose dive when you slam on the brakes.

Have you checked your brake pads to see if they need replaced?
