Default Attempted catalytic converter theft

Someone attempted to steal one of my catalytic converters last night. We stopped at Yard House prior to attending a concert at Red Rocks and the attempt was made in the parking lot. Upon starting old Indy, it was apparent something was amiss from the exhaust noise.
This will have to be a complete replacement. Any ideas where to find one?

Could this potentially be welded back together? If so, any leads on good welders in the Northern Colorado area are appreciated.

Cat theft is absolutely insane in Calirado. The fb forum here is full of postings like this. And because lawmakers quietly passed CARB laws you'll spend about $2500 for a new y-pipe. Welding is the way to go in this case.

If you need to drive, auto parts stores have sleeves you could clamp over to get you by, or patches to wrap on that harden with heat. I'm sure the muffler shops know the best way to deal with it. Sorry to say I bet they see a lot of this with the high price for platinum and the low price for meth.

I have an appointment at Boulder Muffler next week to have it welded. They get great reviews and there are multiple comments from reviewers that had this same issue and they successfully welded the exhaust back together.

We have another vehicle I'll use until this is repaired.

Thanks for the advice.

If you have the money…and the greed of keeping your Land Rover maintained with upgraded fancy new parts ….or if some parts are just old and could be replaced for the sake of long term maintenance.

While your muffler shop is down there….

You could replace the cats or remove them so this doesnt happen again. If you’re in an emmisions state, delete is a no. But if you’re cats are old they could cut out both and weld in new ones and or if you’re truly greedy and have the money you could replace the entire cat y pipe by purchasing a replacement. Welding new ones in is totally sufficient but in my case I have a broken exhaust manifold bolt to cat pipe I dont want to deal with so I bought a new pipe system and they will do it for me. My cats went bad on the PO and the decided to cut it open and stab it out and reweld.

Some people ask if youre not in an emmissions state why do you care if you have cats? It’s because I want to see how this engine runs on baseline with cats and new O2 sensors. And I am a god darn adult and can do what I want with my own money to my fricken land rover…

With that said if youre in a position to replace the cats maybe consider it? And if you are in that position and can swing it, consider replacing the O2 sensors if you decide to replace the cats. That way you don't have to do it yourself if one goes bad and you know all 4 are good. Please research which O2 sensors to buy before, if you do.

last thing to consider… if you have a muffler currently…and you also are interested in what kind of different sounds your D1 can make… consider deleting the muffler. It’s just going to rust more if it hasnt already. Plus if you delete it you can now let all your neighbors know what time it is when you start it up in the morning…. Kind of whacky. Kind of fun.

Food for thought…

Up to you, if you are passionate about it maybe consider it. Things like that can be extremely untimely and mess up your life so it’s totally understandable to weld it up. But eventually there may be another visit to a shop for bad cats and o2 sensors. Like I said they are already down there and you know… they are professionals at all things cats, exhaust, and o2 are their bread and butter.

If you are going to change the work on them though, please call them first. They will appreciate it and will walk you through it if need be. Research the O2 on the forums to buy if you do. I just did my D2 sensors and I luckily bought the brand that was trusted to work instead of reported faulty ones. If and when you do ask them to replace the sensors, kindly request they replace the sensors and identify clearly you do not want them to cut and rewire.

cat and o2 replacement aside though delete that muffler… its two more cuts and two welds…

The people should be made aware early and often that D1s are still on the road….
