Default Catalytic Converter Question/Problem

Hello,

One item on my 99 Disco I (100K miles)...when idling you hear the converter "ticking"...I've been told only way to stop this is to replace the converter. You can't hear it in the car & everything runs fine & passed emmissions test no problem.

Also, since the Disco spent first 50K of it's life in New England, the whole cat-back is rusty (but muffler is fine, no holes/noise).

Parts houses show replacement cats & cat-back exhaust is wayyy too pricey!

Anyone had any luck w/ aftermarket muffler shops just putting generic cat & muffler??

Any ideas/experiences welcome!!

Thanks.

JKK

if the oxygen senors come before the cat converter then just use any that will fit. If they come behind or on the cat con then just ignore the problem.

or if your brave jack the front end up in the air cut off the exhaust behind the cat. Run untli exhaust is very hot. Then take a house and spray cold water into the cat this rapid change in temp will break apart anything loose in the cat. Rev the engine high for a while to blow any crap out the of the cat. Repeat four times. Then reattch the exhaust. There is a cat conv present, but it will be damn near hollow. You will get better gas mileage and performance from your engine. Louder exhaust note, but you will be legal since you have a cat conv.
