i went to home depot with the plug and the temp sender and found what i needed. its a pipe flange to compression fitting adapter (3/4 SAE to 3/4 NPT), then a 3/4 to 1/8 NPT reducer, then the sender.

the plumbing section... there is no specific NPT to SAE adapter... but flange end pipe fittings are SAE thread, and compression fittings are NPT thread. or at least the ones i bought are.

That is not male pipe flange

It is flare thread

Here is the pic top is plug bottom is adapter 1/2" male flare to 3/8" pipe thread to fit the switch I bought, I actually ground off the nipple on the pipe adapter it is not needed here and gets the temp probe closer to the coolant

Ok, so question. The plug that came out looks to have an obvious taper whereas the 1/2 flare end appears to have no taper. So how is it sealing? Just a lot of tape or thread sealant?

I put tape on it and tightened it all the way, no idea on mine till I get the engine fixed, think the original plug just looks tapered in the pic but is not

I think this is the nipple. Pardon the crude cell phone edit.
