Battery drain, common causes?
'95 Disco, recent motor overhaul, car is new to me. If I disconnect the battery, no problem. If i leave it connected, the battery will lose enough overnight that the car won't start. I've checked the obvious, but maybe somebody can give me other causes to look into. Thanks, Bill
One way to test drain without a meter is to take a tail light bulb, and use it in series with the battery terminal and the cable. High drains will make the bulb glow brighter. Unplug fuses to narrow it down.
When you did this, and you turned on something, did the bulb glow? Perhaps your drain is modest, may have to use a volt meter on the amp scale, but caution, easy to blow fuse inside meter.
I tried the bulb test, but nothing. I did not turn anything on while cable was connected to the post via the bulb. I discovered something today though that might explain the problem. I was working on the car (when am I not working on the car?) and had the radio playing a CD. Within 1 hr my battery voltage read 10 volts. I think I have a bad battery. Will report back later when I have the money to buy a new one! Told you stuff is expensive down here! Later
At salvage yards up here pull out batteries go for $25 and usually will last past next pay day. If your battery has closed tops, may pry up and see if water is well above plates and cell dividers (only add distilled water).
