Default Bike Rack of Choice - 4 Bikes

Any pedal bikers out there that use a carrier for 4 bikes on their D1? Seems bulky.

Any 4-bike rack is going to be bulky. For me the only way to go is a hitch mounted rack. I just can't see putting 4 bikes on the roof and making a Disco even higher, not to mention they would be difficult to put up there and take down.

I've got an old Yakima for my D2. I had to remove the spare tire to make it fit in the hitch receiver.

+1 except that I bought a 6" hitch extension from a trailer shop.

I've seen 2-bike racks that were installed with a 6" extension. That allowed them to fit 4 bikes on the rack total...as long as you don't mind your bikes touching each other.

Bingo. Make the rack a swing away so you can open your door too.

Mine swings DOWN.... but that doesn't work with a bike on it. The swing away would be great, but that would require me to spend money on a new one.

Haha, that's funny. I don't mind if my mtn bike gets scratches from being ridden, but scratches from transport or storage drives me nuts. So bikes touching or my bike touching the rack where not intended is a major NO-NO. I'm weird, I know.

When I was biking across New Zealand, we would sometimes put 6 bikes on a 2-bike rack. To minimize the rubbing, we would place inflated pushbike inner tubes between the bikes. Well, those of us that cared used inner tubes.
