Bought a Disco 1 via auction - need some advice please
We recently bought a 1995 Discovery 1 V8 3.9L online via auction and will collect it soon. As we're collecting it from Canada, do you see any parts (besides the usual service items) that need to be replaced in order to do a long-distance drive home?
Not sure how long your drive is but I would suggest either being complete and having a AAA card or shipping it
This time of year can be an issue traveling with cold and weather unless the vehicle is nick condition that can be problematic
Suggestions
Battery and alternator electrics
Coolant
Oil filter transfer case differentials lubed drive shaft
Wipers wiper fluid
Defrost/heat
Tires brakes suspension
Power steering
Air cleaner
Plugs wires
VSS and CPS
Lighting
Radio
Window switches - sunroof switches (if equipped)
Cruise control
Not sure what the rulings are for buying a vehicle in Canada, and transporting it to the US (?) being it is over 25 years old, there may not be a problem, I don't know.... other than that, I'd drive it around locally before I took it on a cross country trip if you are not too familiar with LR's. and plan on extra oil, brake fluid, Power steering fluid, coolant, trans fluid, etc. Wouldn't hurt to know condition of brakes, belts hoses, etc. before starting out. I assume you will have a follow vehicle (?) looks to be in pretty good shape from the outside. If it was me, I'd be more worried about the border crossing. (license, title, insurance, imoprt tax? etc.)
Looks like mine! Engine stops running if alternator breaks, or distributor amplifier, or coil. Overheats and steers hard if serpentine belt breaks. I suppose I would pack those parts. Amplifier needs a tiny torx bit to remove/install if mounted on dizzy. Plugs and wires are easy enough to buy along the way if needed, but the wires look pretty new, so plugs likely are too. Vacuum advance diaphram is prone to failure, maybe check if it holds a vacuum vs leaks through. If it leaks, seal off the vacuum port until you can replace the unit.
Bring blankets and extra food - incase you get stranded.
Battery hold down is missing.
Bring extra coolant - I would bring 2 gallons. (coolant reservoir, radiator and head gaskets tend to leak by this age) - keep an eye on your temp alot.
do shake down before you set off.
top off all fluids - rear diff looks to be leaking
Check the steering damper bushings & tie rids (will give wobble at highway speeds) - lay under with someone turning wheel - look for play in the bushings/tie rods
extra wheel bearings may not be a bad idea
