I guess this can be done on all motors. Even the alternator?

How is your battery? Is that also from 1998? haha

Check that before you do anything else.

I finally fixed my starting problem today, changed the starter "TWICE", Installed it the first time and when I was about to plug in the ignition wire the ****ing thing broke off of the starter, almost made me cry. I had to pull the starter off again, take it home, solder the ****ing piece back on and put it on again... It started on the first try after that...

Battery is new. Just threw in an Interstate a few weeks ago. 4-5 days of sitting and no crank. I do have oil saturated the starter end of the line. That leaves the starter and alternator i guess. Both of which need to be replaced but i'm pretty stoked they got 18 years of use and still going. Alternator i can do myself. Starter not so much. May research some local shops. If i ran into the situation you did i would be up the creek since i dont have any soldering eq.

Starter is not bad either, its a bit messy but doable. Like I said I took mines off twice yesterday... you will need a 24 inch extender for the top bolt and a Swivel Ratchet Wobble, they are torx bolts so you will need a torx set.

Did you crawl under it and do the work or use ramps? Lift? Seems like it would be a bear having to lie underneath it.

I just crawled under it and did the work. But then again my Disco has a 3 inch lift so I can just crawl under it whenever I need to do something, change the drive shafts, oil, starter, etc...

I installed a quick disconnect on the negative side my Disco's battery. This is to disconnect the battery if I park it and plan to be out of town for more than a couple of days.
The downside is that I'll have to reprogram the radio stations on my Sony radio but I normally use my iPod.

Any pics or specs on the quick disconnect? I like the idea since mine is not a DD.

"I guess this can be done on all motors. Even the alternator?"

I bought a can yesterday and sprayed the heck out of the starter, well, at least what I could hit. It has a heat shield that blocks most of it. Had to crawl underneath it.

That heat shield is just snapped on to the starter, you can move it out the way easily, but it's also held with a screw so it wont come off.
