Default Brakes spongy (no recent work done)

have a 1997 land rover discovery 1. One morning brakes felt soft and spongy, pedal all the way to the floor to come to a slow stop. checked the reservoir was below the minimum filled it up brakes got a little bit better but no where that feels safe. any ideas have not done any work on the brakes in about 6 months.

Likely that they need to be bleed. If you fill level was low some air may have crept into the line.

On a 22 year old truck the brake lines are subject to air leaks under the best conditions. Maintenance bleeding regularly is probably a good practice.

I would also inspect for leaks - especially behind the front driver wheel (US version) where there is a coupler. I replaced all my brake lines 4 yrs ago after mine failed at that location.

Thanks for the info, found no leaks. That’s what weird with the reservoir I check it pretty regularly with how crappy brakes are in these cars. I feel like over a week it dropped drastically. Hopefully they just need to bleed.

I absolutely hope it is something as simple as a bleed.
I would also inspect the calipers - could be leaking (had this happen too! and it was newly reman'd)
if it is a leaking caliper you will have to replace the pads and the rotor too (the fluid ruins them both)
