Default Look ma no brakes!!!

I own a 97 disco bought used. The past couple of days the brake pedal has been going to the floor and brakes slow me down but don't stop, also the brake light was on. I added a little brake fluid and changed the pads front and back. Brakes are a little better now, at least I stop, and light is out, but pedal still spongy and goes almost to the floor. What else should I check, I don't live close to anybody Land Rover so I use mechanic that has most experience on LR's in my area, which isn't much. Any help would be GREATLY apperciated.

So start with bleeding your brakes, completely, 3 pints of DOT 4. If that doesn't work, replace the master cylinder.

Bleeding the brakes is not a hard thing to do. If you don't know how, just google it. It sounds like a daunting task, but in all reality, it isn't that difficult. If you can changed the pads (and if you did it right, but didn't bleed the brake system) you now have air bubbles (which is why you have no brakes) in the lines.

one man brake bleeding kit at most auto stores. Used one on my master cyldr replacement this week. Ideally they cost about 7 bucks and save you a big headache. Do each wheel. Most of the bleeder bolts you can get to without removing the wheel

Did this come on suddenly? Does it do it some times, and sometimes is ok? If yes to either, try pulling your ABS fuse temporarily and take it for a test drive. A failing ABS pump can cause similar symptoms, though usually you'll feel it engaging.
Just be careful where you do the test drive.. i.e., not in heavy traffic.

BTW, where are you located, I know a guy who lives in the N GA mountains who works on Rovers.

Bleeding the brakes will release the bubbles from the brake line. So better do that. I totally agree with 556guy.
