Question Camshaft endplay ???

HELP THE OVERHAUL MANUAL IS EITHER NUTS OR SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG

trying to check camshaft end play and coming up with .117 "

so i am a confused in the manual clearly i am told to replace just the bolt...not the gear...and measure...end play.......new plate changes nothing....

CAMSHAFT AND TAPPETS
Camshaft end-float - check
1. Remove rocker shaft assemblies.
2. Remove pushrods and store in their fitted
order.
3. Remove timing chain and gears.
4. Temporarily fit camshaft gear bolt.
5. Attach a suitable DTI to front of cylinder block
with stylus of gauge contacting end of
camshaft.
6. Push camshaft rearwards and zero gauge.
7. Using camshaft gear bolt, pull camshaft
forwards and note end-float reading on gauge.
End-float = 0.05 to 0.35 mm (0.002 to 0.014 in)
8. If end-float is incorrect, fit a new thrust plate
and re-check. If end-float is still incorrect, a
new camshaft must be fitted.

i am going back to check end play with the gear.....

also have read from other sources that end play
does not matter when thrust plate is used.......

really want to continue with assembly so well explained answeres greatly appreciated!!!!

also states this in manual

NOTE: If camshaft or thrust plate has been
replaced, it will be necessary to re-check
camshaft end-float.

ok so both have been replacedd and ive checked now what
???? no solution mentioned?? no adjustment spoken of?? ....HELP

I was wondering what happened to you

That section is outdated. It only applies to the 3.9. With the 4.0 you check it with the gear on.

I also found this confusing.

Try removing the power steering pump by following the RAVE literally. You can't. It's wrong.

I've done a bunch of camshaft end float adjusments.
If you have a 96/97 with the cam plate you measure with the gear off. You must have the mating surface of the cam plate machined
(that's the surface that faces the block). You take your .117" measured and subtract .005" . That leaves you with .112 to remove from the cam plate. that should leave you with .005 end float. If you have the half moon plate 97/98 you meaqsure with the gear on and must remove the material from the nose of the camshaft. It's a pain to do but worth it. Land Rover had problems with a knocking noise from the camshaft area. The original fix was to install a cam button.

Cheers

That is good to know. That is why I hate the minor variations from one version to another even in mid-year changes.

Thumbs up Thanks !!!

Thanks Eric and everybody .... I had read your post eric but was still confused ;0

after i measured with the gear on i was getting measurement towards the largest tolerance......I took measurements on the torque plate and everything seemed very flat ....The way the camshaft actaully fits into the back of the camgear...takes up most of that .117 ...yes....and it is sorta difficult to get it on there with timing belt attached (after measuring the end play) ..and then thrust plates i nthe way too .... you have to keep pulling the shaft forward with the bolt... I also measured end play with the timing belt installed and it was well within tolerance... so ....I just went with it.....

Also noticed that about the power steering Eric ....I never did get the housing off the block....the blots were frozen in there...so i ended up removing the pump with out the housing...

I saw your post about your idle and such hope all is going well with that by now Im trying to keep up with whats goin on with ya ........in your posts.....and such.....let me know if you would've done anything different in hindsight .....
