Default Can EGR blanking cause over-heating?

Hi Forum,
I've installed (on my own) EGR Blanking Kit on my Discovery 300tdi '98. On the first long drive the engine got over-heated and because I spotted it one minute too late it died.
Could this be related to the EGR blanking? If so, what could have I done wrong?
Thanks,
Harel

IMHO no, more likely some other cooling system malady. See UltraGauge Automotive Information Center and OBDII Scan Tool for a device that lets you watch coolant temp more closely, and have alarm reminder points. The factory gauge is known for having an average response. You could have any number of other problems, like radiator sludge, bad thermsotat, etc.

So, now that it has happened, how much damage did you cause, do you know how to determine that and track down the real problem?

If anything, I'd think EGR blanking would reduce temperatures.

its definitely going to reduce your inlet air temperatures.

so i think youd actually be running cooler without egr.

sure you didnt have to undo something else to perform the blanking work, and forget to bleed the cooling system or something?

I have done many EGR blanking on both 200 and 300 Tdi's on defenders and Disco's and had no problems with over heating. When you say over heating did you loose the coolant from the expansion tank or some where else. If you had the "black" expansion tank then I have seen them split and dump the coolant causing overheating and seized engines. More common on the 300's for some reason.

Default Conclusion

Thanks to all those who replied...
Disco Mike - I didn't open the engine. I don't know how it is in the UK but here (Gibraltar\Spain) mechanics want £250 (and that's the cheaper of quotes...) just to open the engine and see what the problem is. If the problem is more than head gasket then it is not worth while to fix it and there goes £250 to the bin... I wanted to open the engine myself however I never find the time for it...
Just like most of you mentioned my logic says that EGR blanking should reduce temprature...
Eventually I've found a 2nd hand engine for reasonable price with warranty so I'll probably go for the swap.

Buzz, thank you for the warning, it is well in place. I'll be on the alert.
