Default Clicking on front axle

When driving forward(not reverse) I am hearing a clicking sound from my front axle. I had a good look today and where the drive shaft is attached there is something moving and that is making the noise. I am not able to find anything in the manual I downloaded, a workshop manual I think is from Rover. From searching on the forums it sounds like it may be a dry u-joint?

Have all of your u-jonts inspected or maybe even replaced if you have no idea the condition they are in.

Got my u-joints greased and that did not stop the clicking, also another note when I apply the brakes the clicking goes away. I know it has nothing to do with my brakes or cv joints I checked them out. Is there anything else it could be? Something where the drive shaft connects to the front axle?

Pinion flange to ujoint flange at the end of the driveshaft, four or five bolts with nylock nuts. Also the slip joint is splined and when worn they can have enough slop to cause noise.......and eventually failure.

Anything I can do to hold off the failure? Or now that it is clicking only a matter of time? Or better yet do you have a good link to a manual?

Yep, finding the problem will eliminate it for sure.....

landroverresource.com

It's the last Rave available, 590mb file is the one you want.

I had a similar issue with the rear drive shaft. Horrible clicking noise or more like a metallic slapping noise is what I heard. I looked underneath and sure enough, one of the u-joints wore so bad it almost ate through the flange. Good thing I caught it in time. I'm having the same issue with the front drive shaft now. Changing out the joints next weekend. I would change both out just to be on the safe side.

It happens when I slow down maybe going 5-10 going straight. You can hop underneath and check the u-joints by pushing/pulling on the driveshaft near the joints. If there is excessive play the u-joints are fried. I will try to post some pictures next weekend for reference if you haven't taken care of the issue by then. Oh, and no I have not lubed the swivel *****. I have been meaning to as I just found out that there is a grease that should be used instead of whatever is in there now.

So wait is your issue fixed or not??? If not next place I'd look is brake pads they can rattle/click and it will drive you crazy.
