Default Clonking sound in drive line

My V8 98 Disco (Automatic with 1480000km) has a significant clonking sound while stationary when changing from drive to neutral and back (or any gears for that matter). I am not a mechanic but assume the problem must exist within the drive-line.

How do I diagnose the source of the wear?
What is it likely to cause such a problem?

Recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

This is a very often cited noise. Most of the time it is normal and means nearly nothing. Many have tried to rid the drive line of slack to no avail.

The only practical thing to do, the thing that you can easily check yourself, are the flange connections to the differentials and the ujoints along both the front and rear drive shaft.
