No electrical, need your help on this one guys
Need some ideas on this one:
1) 1998 D1 SE7, Everything was working great.
2) I hooked up my Snap-on MT2500 (red brick) scanner with the key off, S-7 key, turned on the key (vehicle not running at this point) and was navigating to engage the OBD II (generic) setting within the scanner when I heard a 'click' and everything went dead. No lights on the dashboard, no fan, no radio, no start, no nothing.
3) Unhooked the battery for a while, double-checked the connections and hooked back up 5 min later. After reconnecting the battery I could hear the heater box vent door cycle back/fourth and stop, but still nothing in terms of electrical.
Any thoughts? This is a new one to me. I've used this scanner a lot on my other vehicles but it was the first time I tried to hook it up to the Disco. Everything was hooked up properly. Anyway I could have damaged the ECM, or is there a main power relay or security interlock I need to look into? The drivers door was open while I was doing this.
Looking for any suggestions please. What would you check first?
Thanks,

Check the battery connections for corrosion, then check the fuse box by the battery there is a two screws closes to the battery in the fuse box, check to make sure they are not loose or corroded, then check your grounds.
Ok, got it going. Basically, I think the battery was just low enough probably from sitting for a while with the door open. Recharged it overnight and she's all good. What freaked me out was everything went out at the very moment the scanner was getting into the ECM. Just a coincidence though.
But I DO want to replace the main positive battery cable this summer anyway as a precautionary measure. It's becoming pretty badly corroded. Works ok now, but??

Here it is. Our Land Rover Discovery is a 1998. It seems to have two problems or maybe the problems are connected, we can't figure it out.
First it will overheat after driving for about an hour, especially if we drive it on the highway, my husband changed the thermostat last summer and we just bought another one to see if it helps. We also put some of the radiator fluid in that helps keep the temp lower. The vehicle idles to high when driving and then when we put it in park it shoots up to almost 2,000 rpms.
The other problem is weird. During driving it will all of a sudden loose all electrical, lights, wipers, radio, windows, everything. Then when we go to turn if off and put it in park, it will make this grinding noise, that my husband finally got to hear, because it happens very randomly, he said it sounded like the starter trying to start even though it was already running. Let it sit for an hour or two and then everything is normal again, electrical works again, it doesn't make the grinding noise when put in park. We can't figure out what it could possibly be and we don't want to leave it in park and on for very long (long enough to check where the sound is coming from) because the grinding sound sounds so bad.
Last problem, the anti-lock brakes light is on and sometimes when I push on the brake it resists and makes a fast bumping I can feel in the brake pedal and it gets very hard sometimes to get the car to stop you really have to push hard on the brake. Thanks for anyone who has some advice.

You are in the right section (DI), but to get fresh eyes on your post you should start this as a NEW THREAD.
Just hit the button that says: "new thread" near the top/left of the list of threads.
But honestly Lisa, your problems sound fairly profound. If you don't have at least some mechanical skills in your family, the desire to really get your hands dirty, and some basic tools, your best bet is a shop. Or sell it.
Also, sometimes members local to you can be of great help. Tell us where you are located.
And you and yours should probably look though this list and read up on what ails you.

Finally, if you are serious about DIYing this, download the RAVE for the D1 which can be found in my signature section.

If your coolant expansion tank is black replace it, they fail at the seams. A compression test will check heads for a leaking head gasket.
Idle Air Control Solenoid is causing the high idle and rpms. Clean it's port and pintle.
Ignition relay might be on it's way out, if points are sticking/arcing that could cause it to fail loosing electrical and or trying to engage the starter. You may want to find a shop on that if that's over your head. You might want to remove your ignition switch on the butt end of the key tumbler and clean that up too......
ABS pedal kickback is a well known and documented fault. Do a search of this forum for reading up on what to do about it as there are two schools of thought, remove fuses is most popular and fix it is least popular.
Good luck, your work is cut out for you but many here have already walked the walk so no problem for us to help out.

Thank you, my husband has been a HVAC/R Lead Technician in commercial service for years. He is quite mechanical and has already replaced or repaired many things on this vehicle, but thanks anyway.

Thank you, much appreciated. I guess I'm going to start a new thread now, people are telling me to do that.
