Clunking Noise drivers front wheel
1996 D1..
I've got a clunking noise (a little higher pitch but pretty loud) coming from the front drivers side wheel that is associated with the rotation of the wheel. So slow clunking at slow speeds .. faster clunking as I speed up. Clunking will stop when I apply the brakes. I took the tire, brake pads, caliper off and can make it clunk by moving the rotor back and forth. Seems to be associated with play in the drive shaft maybe.
Any ideas to point me in the right direction ? I ordered a 52mm socket so I could finish taking everything apart hoping it was something I could easily see..

It might just be a loose or worn wheel bearing. I like the cheap easy fixes first. You will see that there is a locking washer that wraps around the 52mm nut in front and in back. A part of the washer will bend towards you around the "lock nut" and then the same washer will be bent back towards the axle obviously in a different spot over the "tension nut". Sometimes those can back out and loosen up. Order new lock washers before you begin. This happens because the assembly procedure might not have been followed or because the wheel bearing is just worn out. This is something you need the RAVE for. You may be able to move the "lock nut" back and forth by hand right now. I could on mine and had to re-torque everything when I first got it.
Thanks.. I did just have a brake job done.. And I think the timing may line up when this started happening. I'll order new washers then...waiting on my 52mm socket anyways. I've got a copy of the Rave Manual so I'm good there.

Original bearings?
Take off the wheel, grab the rotor at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and attempt to wiggle the hub. If you have play in any direction your bearings are either worn, not set properly in the hub, or not pre-loaded correctly.

yep.. original bearings.. I tried that initially and it seemed "tight"... I did notice after taking it all apart that the "shaft" seemed to have a lot of play...in the drive flange.. It moved in and out pretty far. Once my 52mm socket comes in and I get the rest apart I'm hoping it's pretty obvious what the issue is.. just haven't had a lot of experience with these front hubs.... I've replaced D2 rear hubs but those are easy.
Yes.. circlip was there... took at couple of quick videos to maybe clarify. thx for all the responses. I won't be able to work on it further till sunday but if you see something in the below 2 vids that definitely points to one thing or another please let me know.. 52mm socket is on its way
