Confused by the alarm system and RAVE
I am trying to mate a new 2 button handset (FOB) to my 98 d1. The truck came to me without any FOB's.
Along the way I have had to read and try to understand what the RAVE is telling me, but here is where I am confused.
Per British - Atlantic, the 98 is covered in the RAVE under the 96 model headings. But that part of the RAVE is talking about volumetric systems, a sounder with battery back up and using a passive coil around the key chamber on the steering column. I do not believe the 98 has all that.
So far I have only tried the 8 second steps to get it into programming mode with no success and I may have other issues like a rear door switch that is failing. (the door slammed hard to get to shut results in an open door reading thus not letting the alarm set)
Has anyone been through this before? (btw - I am in the US)
Thanks

Just popped cover off steering column - confirmed. This truck does NOT have the passive ring around the key-switch.
Anyone??? Does this mean I follow the NON-96 modem instructions or still rely on the 96 model instructions, just ignoring the parts about the passive coil (I think that is the volumetric portions)
Thanks ya - all

My shop says they use this procedure - and they HAVE a TestBook.. (weird huh?) They gave me a print out and said "good luck, we try to avoid having to do this"
I guess it is time to find a new shop in town with a right equipment cause I cannot get this to work - even though the RAVE says it should.
HANDSET INITIALISATION
NOTE: New handsets are supplied in pairs.
If a new handset is required, it will require
initialisation to the ECU using the
following procedure:
1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet switch depressed.
2. Carry out instructions 3. to 9. within 8 seconds.
3. Switch ignition ON.
4. Switch ignition OFF.
5. Lock doors.
6. Unlock doors.
7. Release bonnet switch.
8. Switch ignition ON.
9. Switch ignition OFF.
If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will light. It is now possible to programme two
handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU.
This must be carried out within two minutes.
10. Press and hold down button on first handset until
dash LED flashes.
11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.
12. The LED will extinguish if both handsets have been initialised correctly.
