Default Crankshaft Position Sensor Maintenance ('98 w 168k)

Hi all, as stated on title wanted to get some input on the crankshaft position sensor. I've done some readings and seem to see more threads on this for the series II and not so much on DI but definitely some that cause no start issues. Some have mentioned keeping an aftermarket spare incase it goes since it will disable the car.

My questions?

I don't have a problem keeping a spare in case it goes out in the field but am I better off just replacing the sensor as a maintenance item?

Also all the threads seem to point to aftermarket sensors vs OEM, seems aftermarket is okay.

Just looking to avoid some potential headaches while out in the mountains.

Thanks

I have a couple of used ones (known to be good) pm me if you are interested. I've always carried a spare with me....as well as the socket to change it ...lol

while not preventive maintenance, it is much easier to change in your driveway than on a trail. the old one could always be a spare
