Default Cruise control almost fixed, maybe

Ok I've had this 98 Disco for a few months now and have worked through almost all of the issues that are common with these things. I am down to the cruise control. Replaced VAC lines. Last week went to the pick n pull and pulled a diaphragm a Vac pump and the silver cruise ECU from under the dash. I replaced each component went for a drive and repeated with no success.

A few days later I tried it headeding down the free way and it worked! Ran some errands and haven't been able to repeat the success.

The one time it worked I was able to turn it on, off, accel, ect. It seemed to be in perfect order but nothing since then.

Any help would be great!
Thanks

There is a thread floating around that someone changed over to the later model ecu. They too were having a similar issue as you. He said he swapped multiple used units to no avail. Once he converted it worked.

Go to the jy get a d2 cruise unit same general location iirc it says cruise on it, get the plug with as much wire as possible, remove d1 cut out d1 plug wire in d2 plug, cruise unit fits in same area

There are 2 d2 units one has an extra wire that is not used on d1,either 1 works, I did the switch and started working but think I lost the relay now
