LS probably wouldn't be any worse MPG than the rover motor

while that may be true - Ive spent many of hours researching a diesel swap and consistently reach the conclusion of 300tdi as the only real logical option

Mercedes - to slow
Cummins - rattles apart vehicle
Toyota - requires entire wire harness ecu, instrument cluster and ignition assembly
Isuzu- good luck sourcing one in good shape for under 10k and relocates tcase

all of these options including the 300tdi have the looming 'where would I source parts if on the road far from home' issue.

LS+4l80E+marks trans to tcase adaptor - if my math is correct is actually 1" shorter than stock engine and tranny
tcase location remaining unchanged.

part of the appeal to me for this setup is - no matter where in the us and likely canada - I could blow up a ls or tranny and source a used one easily.

I'd change one thing, dump the 4l80e for a 6l80e. During your "hours of research" did you read this thread: GM Gen 4 conversion including LS - Defender Source It now takes days to read.

that link isnt working for some reason (nor is the site sorta) but I think that was in FourWheeler mag - not a whole lot of detail - Two-Letter Defender: An LS-Powered Land Rover that goes as good as it looks

yeah the 6l80e is sweet - but also much more $$
its all just a dream at this stage

Not a 4bt which is a 3.9l and is only $5k in long block crate style. Have you looked into the International HS 2.8 TGV yet?

Yes I have heard of it but I have had a hell of a time finding info on it - pretty much gave up on it as I figured if its that illusive online - finding parts and service support would be nill.
But Im all ears if you got some sources.
