These pics and explanation are great. I have a 2003 LR Discovery II. My wife drives it most of the time, but I noticed in my garage that a spot was developing. I thought it might have been the transmission leaking fluid, but these pics confirmed its a leak coming from the transfer case. How serious is this leak? I am not a very hands on guy and don't have very many tools to do this job. Just wondering if anyone would know what the cost of this fix would run me?

How serious the leak is depends on how bad it is leaking.
To do this repair (reseal the inspection plate) yourself assuming you already have the tools will be around $15.
$5 for a tube of RTV, $10 for 2 quarts of gear lube.
To have it done, depending on where you get it done, $50 and up and a full day without your truck.

You must have no less than 5 posts to see pics.

Thanks alot for the info, I really appreciate it. My neighbor is a mechanic and we talked about it yesterday and he is going to help me out with it. It is not leaking too bad, I was just wondering how serious a leak in this area was. My neighbor explained it to me a bit which also helped. Just glad it isn't too seriouis an issue. Once again, thanks.

Like OP suggested, Teflon tape.

Always have a roll of that in your garage. Always.

Great write up. My xcase is a tad wet as well so this is on my list of things to do.

Hey does anyone know the pounds/torque to use when putting the plate bolts back on? I guess with the RTV your safe but figured I would ask.
