Default Damn Disco

97' discovery..... Many things have just gone wrong with it. Recently head gaskets replaced AGAIN!!! After got it back this time the transmission was staying in lower gear way to long (Not shifting into next gear until high rpm's) This mainly happens when first run (Cold). Now the other day, the transmission just quit working while driving. Barely would I even get it to move. Felt like a terribly bad slipping clutch (I have a Automatic). I left on side of road and called a towing company. They showed up many hours later (Car completely cooled off by then) Cranked the Disco up and drove it 2 miles to the house. I thought the transmission was SHOT. They said as soon as they pulled into driveway, the transmission was acting up again (Obviously when car temp got hotter). I never had 1 problem with the transmission prior to this experience.

Anyone else had this kind of problem? And what the hell may be going on with it?

Many Thanks to all who post!!!!!

Fluid color red, or lots of dark particles (clutch disk particles)?

When has fluid and filter been changed?

Is it leaking fluid. Maybe it's actin up because its low. Check the levels while the engine is running.

The first time the head was not shaved flat I suspect. No overheating just blown head gasket again.

It may be leaking fluid, I have it across town currently and will check soon. The fluid, I have done myself recently... Twice.

Could be low on fluid. Most likely the governor is hung up, or the rings for the governor are shot causing loss of pressure. The governor collects crap causing the valves in it to get hung up. It's sort of a dead end for the fluid and nothing short of taking it apart will clear it out. The rings are Viton and have been known to fail with age, very common to see this issue posted on BMW forums. The transfer case and adapter housing have to come off to access the governor assembly.. If you never had any issues with the trans it's worth a shot, if you have had problems in the past the A clutch is probably fried and dumped metal into the works that made it to the governor.
Mine was acting up and I found the seals and adapter housing gasket online for about $20 shipped.

Does it still have a strong reverse? I would lean toward clutch A failure...try the Lucas trans fluid if it's low and see if it'll kick any better.

Reverse, Drive and Low all takes some time shifting into when the vehicle gets warm. This all is new to the Disco. It never did this before. I just got a Transmission filter in the mail and will change. I havent touched the vehicle in about a year

Dump in sea foam , drive to get hot and let sit few days then service in case you just have sticking valve body

Where is current fluid level? Running in neutral

Detent hooked up and adjusted?

While under I would check or change transfer case and diffs fluids

Check the throttle valve adjustment - probably was not set right upon reassembly of the engine.

Some also call it the kickdown cable.

Adjustment procedure is in the book.
