did my transfer case eat itself?
on the way back to memphis from the ARS sring rally i think i blew my transfer case in my 98 disco. i was driving unlocked at 55mph highway when a large clunk came about, my diff lock light came on,and then a sound similar to my blown rear diff last year sounded just like grinding gears that cant catch. pulled over and inspected and found the transfer case smoking and fluid dispelled throughout the underbody.
So i think its my transfer case and a my front left axle which i jacked up in hot springs as well(shreded wheel bearing, caused overheat on left front axle melting axle to hub, put on new wheel bearings in hope to make it home but i did not disconnect the axles and drive shaft to the front like i should have.) so i believe the mix of the two is what finally caused the failure of the case.
anyone have any ideas or thoughts? any input from those that have blown a transfer case? I thought maybe just the front axles but the feeling is more in the case area, and the physicaldamage seems to be on the case, ie leaking fluid and smoking box.
its still in little rock at the moment so i cant put eyes on it again till weds. when my buddy takes me with his hauler to pick it up.
i have a spare case and spare front axle parts that i can R/R easily just wanted to know if t case is pretty straight forward as rave says and any ideas or reccomendations for repairs or diagnostic checks.
also if you didnt check my signature. its a 98 d1 208xxx. lots of diy work done and done right just need some input here never had to do transfer case work before. i will take off cover plate to case at the earliest i can and take a few shots to post in a few days when shes back home.

Just replaced my T-Case last year. Unlocked high wouldn't stay in gear and lots of rattling and grinding after the initial "POP". No harm to my transmission thought or my drive shafts. Internals were completely destroyed!! I was told the swap was straight forward from my mechanic. Another note, he had to use an air hammer to separate the tranny from the T-Case.
