Diesel conversion for a `98 Discovery
I have been looking for the right engine to use to convert a US `98 Discovery 1 Z-24 automatic to diesel. For less than 10k that is. The Cummins 4BT is the one that many like but I wanted something a little lighter and smoother. The 2.7 out of a 2000-05 Sprinter looked good but the highly electronic engine management is daunting to me. Thought about doing a OM617 but recently picked up a Mitsubishi 4D34 (Fusio and Cantor) which I think might also be a good fit, mainly as it is a predominantly mechanical, direct injection turbo engine with a rear sump. There have been a few Land Cruiser swaps done with this engine and they were done essentially with factory parts (no adapter needed) and seemed to turn out pretty well. Anyone have experience with doing a LR diesel conversion with a non LR diesel engine and how to proceed with this swap? I have been looking long and hard all over the net with little to show for it. Dach.

Yeah except I can count on one hand how many really deep water crossings I've been on and even then if was so brief no water entered the cab or air intake or got anywhere near the coils. Any water high enough to mess up your engine will destroy the inside of your truck. What fun is that?

ok, so you do one windshield deep water crossing a year, which a LS with a snorkel and waterproofed electronics can do (same w any gas motor); and then you suffer all of the other 364 days a year with an anemic old clunker of an engine that struggles to maintain 70 mph, is a pain to find parts for, and gets only 4-5 mpg more than a LS.
no thanks. for $1500 i can have a running 5.3, 4L80E and all of the wiring for it. drop a tune in it, and i'll have close to 300 crank hp and get at least 20 mpg on the highway.
