Diff lock light on, horrible grinding noise
This may help. It is a view of the transfer case from the perspective of the driver's side (U.S.). This one happens to be changed via air locker but the twisting action of the top 'nut' is the same. You can see the output flange to the front drive shaft with the four bolts on it.

I think the sound must be the front axle tearing itself to pieces. I pulled the link on the diff lock and manually set it to lock and babied it home. Looks like I've got a bigger problem than just the differential.
