Default Differential engaged lock light still on

Hello,

I fired up my 1997 5 speed and decided to take it for a spin yesterday.

I found a nice little area after driving for an hour and engaged the diff lock properly to get the fluids moving and ensure things still work properly.

When I was done,i could move the diff **** back to unlock, however, the dash light still remained illuminated showing that the diff was locked.

I tried driving for a bit, resetting the **** several times, even going to low, neutral, etc.

The diff is still engaged in the locked position. Is there anything i can do to lubricate the shifter or look for something to fix from the shifter?

Shifter moves freely for the differential, but the system won't disengage from being locked according to the light on the dash.

Thanks in advance!

Try going 15-20 feet or so feet in reverse with it back in the unlocked position. You do have it in the correct position, back and to the right?

Thanks for the Reply!

Indeed i do. I already tried reversing for more than that. It seems to be stuck, as though shifting to the right rear isn't disengaging the locked position.

It could also be that i need to drive it more than once every 6-7 months.

Thank you for your reply and time

If it feels loose it may be possible that the mechanism may have come undone. You may need to look from underneath, or better view from on top by removing the center console and drilling out the rivets that secure the Hi-Lo CDL shifter, and to make sure that the linkage is all connected and moving properly. If you are going to look at it from underneath make sure to be safe chock the tires, make sure to be parked on a leveled flat surface, and pull up on the emergency brake so the truck does not move.
