I think there is a sticky covering the comparisons somewhere. The majority of people, at least in the D1 section, will immediately tell you to go with the D1, due it's simplicity over the DII, less electronics, the engine management, center diff lock, etc. I bought a D1 without understanding the differences, and I'm glad it worked out that way.

how far is your daily drive? you know these are not economy cars and are you handy with a wrench or willing to learn to be? if your answers are less than 20 miles one way and yes im handy then i would say OK on to your question.
buy a 99-01 D2. 6 more inches of luxury, less likely to be rusted out, can add many different things to activate the CDL and you will find all sorts of neat BMW parts scattered around! its like a mystery wrapped in a enigma wrapped in a piece of aluminuim (and steel)

Vote 99-01 D2. I drive 60 miles a day and love little things like heated seats, nice sound system, etc.. It's having a great 4x4 that feels like a luxury car. I'm all highway miles during the week though. Very easy on a vehicle. My 120k truck doesn't burn a drop of oil and it's still clean at every oil change. My gas mileage isn't any worse than my Jeep and better than the Silverado crew cab we had. So yeah, if you are in it for fuel economy, get a Honda civic.

D1 has generally less stuff to break. The locking center differential is a major plus as previously mentioned. No oil burning or leaking here either at 119k, and you can certainly get heated seats and all the trimmings on a D1 as well. Only thing it lacks in my opinion is traction control, but that's where driver skill comes into play.

If you decide to get D2 make sure you add CDL...
