Disco rough RPM patch, hard shifting transmission
Hi everyone.
So i bought a 98 Discovery I, it had blown head gasket and was seized from hydrolocking, so I opted to buy a used engine and throw it in.
Well it is now replaced and everything is hunky dory except acceleration is rather rough.
The car ideals normally, and accelerates fine except between about 2-3K RPM, it gets rough and seems to loose power, once it gets past that it gets buttery smooth and starts pulling well. It has new plugs and wires, I haven't had an opportunity to check everything yet, there is no CEL. Do these trucks have timing chains or belts? Or is it maybe something simpler then that?
Also on another note, the transmissions seems to shift hard when shifting at low RPMs, it shifts smooth if I am pushing it. What transmission fluid do you use when changing?
This is my play toy second vehicle so I am not really rushing to fix it all at once. Just wondering if you have any suggestions on where to start looking. I am outta state right now, so I won't be able to look at it till probably saturday or sunday.
And can I say, I am super excited about owning this vehicle!

I will take a look at the kickdown cable, very possible its off, didn't even think about it, thanks.
I was kinda thinking about the TPS, I have a complete set of extra sensors from the old motor, I am going to go and clean up everything, maybe even try switching the TPS and see if symptoms improve. Its a very specific RPM range it occurs in, it seems no matter what speed or what throttle application ... which is why i was kind of considering it being a timing issue ... although you would think it would affect more then a range of 2200-2900 rpm if it was that.
If that doesn't improve anything, I will go get a compression test and see if anything is off.

It seems to me if it were related to the timing or something of that nature, it would be throughout the RPM range. The fact that it is rough for that 2 to 3 K rpm range , then "Buttery Smooth" is somewhat puzzling.
Did you go thru the used engine prior to replacing it to check stuff or did you just install an unknown engine?

Well guys, I am going to work on it tomorrow, Just got back from new york tonight, 1300 mile drive is no fun.
Was glad to find it started right up after a week of sitting. It actually felt somewhat better when I drove it around, maybe its just wishful thinking.
I will let everyone know what I discover tomorrow, thanks for the advice!!!
