DIY D1 Cargo Net

DIY D1 Cargo Net
I like having a cargo net for camping ever since I discovered using it on my Xterra. Unfortunately no such product is readily available for a D1. I've seen multiple options for the D2 but for whatever reason all the sales reps say it won't work even w modification. So I decided to make my own using a universal divider available here:

For me this was the size to use as I installed it, it allows me to also use it vertically once I install some hooks low to the floor. This was a lot of trial and error guess work and hopefully this will speed this up for anyone wanting to do the same.
I mounted it to the rear grab handles at the front of the net and then at the rear is where the work began. I hate cutting/drilling if I don't have to. So I decided to use the factory holes in the Alpine window trim panel. Once the push clips are removed you can see they have a plastic nut-certs.For me this would not have been strong enough. So I used lag style hooks to test fit and mock it up.
Next I drilled out the holes needed for the inserts and the original plastic insert in one go. I used 5/16 eye hooks that required a 1/2" hole. I figured these each have a 90lb weight limit and there's no way I'm putting anything close to that heavy up there. I also wanted these hooks to hold up the trim pieces like the original Christmas tree push pins did. So I dialed back the nuts and used a washer so I could adjust the amount of tightness on the panel itself. I think it came out really good. I'll mess around w it and get it more taught. I mocked up what I usually keep up there during a camping trip. It's got two jackets. My back packs, two folding chairs and three rolls of paper towels.

No prob. The width is a little much for the Disco but now that can be messed with. The hardest part for me was getting that rubbery plastic panel on and off w out damaging it. Here it's 115 during the day so that glass area is cooking. I also need to make some sort of shaded insulation for the sunroofs. I hate sunroofs.
