Default engine cranks and cranks , hard to start when cold

Ok this summer my fuel pump failed on on my 98 disco. I replaced with a new one, now the engine is very hard to start. its very hard to start now, once it starts and warms up. its easy to shut off and re-start. Any idea's ? its odd because before it started right up. My thoughts are , maybe the fuel pump wasnt bad , maybe the fuel pump regulator was STARTING to fail ?? Question when the fuel pump regulator fails , is it all at once or does it start to intermitily fail, making me think originally that the fuel pump was bad when it wasnt ??

What pump did you replace, just the pump or the entire fuel pump housing?
Sound like just the pump assembly and you still have a bad pressure relief valve in the old pump housing that is allowing the fuel to bleed out of the rail over night so you have no fuel to start on.

The fuel pump relay can fail all at once or once and awhile.
It is always a good idea to replace that when you do the fuel pump too.

Did you replace the fuel filter?
What brand and grade of fuel are you using?

hey thx for replys, my fuel pump replacement was the whole unit i think they call it a evap unit , it was approx $400 from atlantic british rover parts. all sits down in fuel tank. I think what im hearing is i need to also replace the fuel pump relay ? I'm assuming this is a different part the the fuel pump regulator ?? whats your thoughts on this , where would both of these parts be located for replacements. Are these parts diferent ? should i replace both.. thx for helping me out...

do you have or can you get a fuel pressure gauge ? You should at least check the pressure at the fuel rail...it should be in the mid 30's psi ( 32-36 psi) . When you turn the key to the second "on " position the fuel pump should run and pressurize the rail. A dirty fuel filter can certainly affect the fuel delivery. let us know what you find

If it turns out you need to replace the relay, it is an expensive multi-unit relay, over $100 so look at Roverlandparts.com, they have guaranteed used ones for $50.

thx for all the information , fuel pressure is 30 psi on the the fuel rail while the engine was running, i only used a tire gauge so not sure if the reading was correct, My need to get a more acurate gauge,

thx Mike for heads up on roverland.com i plan on calling them monday morning for the relay...
