The best motor I ever had built was through a college.

This whole thread has got me to thinking, instead of having the local engine re-builder rebuild my engine when it lets loose I might have the college do it.
I'll have to buy a $500 beater car, but so what?

Me too Spike! Man alive there are some dirt cheap motors out there and like i said before the best motor I ever had was built top to bottom by a college class here in Texas. It tokk them two semesters but who cares. The professors are usually very picky about these builds.

I dont think you'll have any trouble with the college unless you're pressed for time. They may take longer than a shop but they will be very careful with it. Pushrod V8s like we have arent complicated engines so there's not really anything that could throw them off. Most colleges outsource machine work anyway so they will likely just do the assembly.

There, I waved my magic cam wand and made it cheaper....now the "uprated" lifters....... As long as you have the correct numbers you can find and order them direct eh. Do the same for the lifters.
I have my Bosch 4.0 at the MS now. Is the 50230 correct for my motor as well? Would most cam distributors know what "uprated lifters match and also the correct timing set?

Sorry about being so green but what is lifter preload, how it is checked and if it is out of spec how is it corrected? Thanks.

Ps. where does one pickup one of those cam wands? What is the correct part number?

Thanks again.

So I got a call from the automotive department and I think they are trying to price me out of having it rebuilt. A bit disappointed by that. The professor had been on the phone with the Land Rover dealer several times throughout the day and told me it could easily be $3k to $4k for parts. He wants a $3500 deposit to even touch it!

Anyway, I told him it's just pushrod V8, essentially the same as a Buick 215, and that some Buick parts would fit. I told him it has a healthy aftermarket in the UK, and that we really ought to be able to get the parts shipped in for less than that.

What all will I likely need? I've been looking for a master rebuild kit and can't seem to find it. If I could reasonably get all the parts for under $2k, I think it would be worth having them go forward. But if not, maybe this wasn't meant to be.

If anyone here has done a rebuild recently or is familiar with pricing on parts, please let me know. $150 for a cam seems pretty awesome (thanks ihscouts), if all the deals are like that this could still come together. Need help ASAP since the class is starting in two days.

Your Prof needs to not source parts from the stealer, give him AtlanticBritish's phone number.

If I did it all over again I'd use Allmakes tappets, rods, rockers, rocker shaft, and HG kit from BP for cheap. I'd source the cam, and timing set from somewhere else though.

Rovers North has parts too.

But if you want upgrades I'd go with OE or higher quality aftermarket for some parts. There are some great aftermarkets cams out there. D and D makes great stuff too. ARP head studs and ceramic coated headers are a good idea.
