exhaust manifold bolts

Default exhaust manifold bolts

So I did it I broke the bolt connecting the manifold to the head. It was my first time trying to replace the exhaust manifold gasket. Did not turn out how I planned. So I took it in to a shop to see what they could do. They said they could not drill them out and would have to take the head off and send it to a machine shop to be drilled and tapped so on and so forth. He told me I'm looking at at least a grand in just labor costs plus parts and what ever the machine shop charges. Thought about maybe replacing the engine? I don't really know just looking for some feed back, thoughts, suggestions any information would be appreciated.

By the way I do LOVE my truck.

No it broke below manifold bolt hole.

You cannot replace the engine for that amount but you could buy used heads.

CYLINDER HEAD 3.9 4.2 3.5 Land Discovery Defender RANGE ROVER CLASSIC | eBay

Machine shop would be about $150 to plane 2 heads to make sure they are flat.
Then a head gasket kit is about $300 plus new head bolts.

O.k. Now how difficult would replacing the heads be. There are probably a lot of variables I know (but in general.) I would really enjoy learning more about my trucks ins and outs but maybe its better to just have a shop deal with it.

Lets look at this as a "get it back on the road as cheap as possible" scenario, used heads are $50 each, head gasket kit is under $500.
So thats $600 in parts.
Labor is going to vary depending on who does the work.
If you pull one head you might as well pull the other one too.
Your engine only has approx. 60,000 miles on it, so it is as good as new.
The problem is it sat for over a year under a tree in West Michigan, so everything is rusted.
But the heads are aluminum, so is the block, aluminum does not rust.
If the both is broken off flush with the head then it will need to be drilled, if there is some sticking out it can be removed still.
Some local help should be around shortly.

It is a long weekend in the garage if you have the proper tools.
Not a hard job, just tedious.
Start Fri. after work, back on the road Mon.

To spike555 definitely something to think about. I would have to find a garage to work out of all weekend. Any chance you know all tools needed?
To ihscouts a rightangle drill fits just barely. I think its less than 5" of space to work in. The drill and then the bit its very tight.

Do we have a right angle drill now is the question. I have my military commitment this weekend though although I have a place to work on it. I'm sure we can rent a right angle somewhere in this town......I have some easy outs. JayJ, don't despair, we'll get ya back in shape. Spike tells me you've fallen in love, we can't have just any ol POS sitting in your parking spot. Nothing to stare at.
