Fly wheel tooth missing

its going to depend a lot on whether the tooth thats missing is used to control a timing event or not...
the odds are pretty slim that it in fact is, but you never know which ones missing without counting.

for example, if its a 60 tooth wheel with wasted spark ignition on a v8, youd only be using a few teeth for ignition events - assuming the injection is bank/rpm based.

Engine was missing badly at over 2000 rpm...and progressively worse as the engine warmed up....mechanic would not guarantee me that that was the problem....tells me of corrosion in computer. But heh a missing tooth....sounds to me like the culprit!

I've already got a bill for $400 for diagnosis. And on top of that the $500 I paid to have a new VSS installed + 3 hours diagnosis at a transmission shop in Asheville....which did not fix the speed/ odometer....(turns out the competent mechanic it is with determined it was a bad relay)....amazing how they demanded the money with no fix. I couldn't live with myself if I charged someone to not fix something. And I just paid and left....shook my head and did not want to ruin my karma with anger.

WOW sorry to hear that man. I hate when people expect money for diagnosing and trying to fix the problem but failing.

Here's another thought - before tearing into this, if you can attach an oscilliscope to the crank sensor wires, you should see a signal like in the attachment. Notice the space where the signal drops out for the two missing teeth. IF your single missing tooth on one side is causing a drop out, you should see that on the scope trace. Does not have to be an automotive scope, can be a garden variety one.

Would be a shame to go to all this trouble, and find out that other problems were at work.

Mechanic mentioned that he found a fault code that indicated the crankshaft and cam shaft are not synchronized.

Any suggestions as to what width, and gauge of metal these teeth are?? as the window of opportunity up on the lift is an hour or so and the welder will need to fabricate something identical on site. Mechanic is unhelpful about measuring etc...and it is like pulling teeth to get this job done....pun intended.

Uhh take it to somebody who can acurately measure one and duplicate it and weld it on.

Well...if I could find a welder with a lift who was a mechanic as well...

Anyway...I am tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday to have the oil pan pulled and inspection plate removed....
