Default FOB Initialization trouble

98 D1: when I purchased the vehicle, it did not come with the fob, just the keys. The keys lock/unlock the doors and start the ignition but often the alarm sounds when I unlock it. This has become quite annoying and embarassing. As I understand it the only way to fully disengage the alarm is with the fob so I ordered a new one. The problem is the initialization procedure is not working.

This procedure is as follows (pg 813 of RAVE workshop manual):
1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet switch depressed.
2. Carry out instructions 3. to 9. within 8 seconds.
3. Switch ignition ON.
4. Switch ignition OFF.
5. Lock doors.
6. Unlock doors.
7. Release bonnet switch.
8. Switch ignition ON.
9. Switch ignition OFF.
If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will light. It is now possible to programme two
handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU.
This must be carried out within two minutes.
10. Press and hold down button on first handset until
dash LED flashes.
11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.
12. The LED will extinguish if both handsets have
been initialised correctly.

I have done this over and over with no luck. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Maybe there is something wrong with the alarm (like someone tried to bypass it)? Any input is much appreciated. Thanks fellas, happy holidays.

I think you end will end up taking it to a dealer and getting them to do it. I've been trying to find out how to do this as mine didn't come with a fob, but I'd like one. After reading a few forum posts, I think I'll stick with a key :-/

After doing much research, it looks like the dealer is going to have to program it. There are programmers that plug into the odbII port but I can't find a site that will deliver to the U.S. Apparently the RAVE method is referring to earlier models which is why so many of us have tried and tried with no luck. SIGH. Thanks again guys. I'll update this when I get it figured out.

Had the same situation. Found it took a special piece of equipment that plugs into the OBDII. A Land Rover shop did in in about 2 minutes, and charged me $25.00.

Where did you get the fob from? All I can find are the cases with no electronics inside.

Got my fob off of ebay. Think I paid $25.00 for it, and it was almost in new condition. A car dealer had a bunch of them they never gave to customers. Keep your eyes open & be patient.

I had another look and found some. The cases are a bit tatty but you can get new cases for $2-$3. I have emailed the local Landy dealer and will wait and see what they want to charge me for a 2 minute job :-/

Well I emailed the local (1 hour drive) dealer. And they don't do it. Old technology. Would have to drive to Milwaukee. No thank you.

So if anyone reads this thread, please find out if your dealer is able to do this before buying any fobs!!!!

I used the Hawkeye diagnostic tool with the appropriate adapter to do mine. It came in handy again when the battery went dead and the alarm system forgot all of the fobs. Now I keep it under the seat.

That is all well and good, but the trouble is that dealer's cannot, or will not program used key fobs; they say that one needs only a new key fob with its attached bar code. However, I do understand that some non dealer repair shops that have the right equipment, can program used keys. The Hawkey will not program used key fobs; I have repeatedly tried that, so I contacted Bearcat Hawkey, asking them if they would include, on next software update, ability to program used key fobs. They promised me that they would, so if they do, those of us who have Hawkeye, can look forward to being able to do it in future.
