Default Fob questions.. (Don't have one)

Sorry for asking but fob is a 3 letter word and forum search tools won't search for 3 letter words.

I've got only a key; which does not work well in ignition

Is not having a fob going to cause me alarm issues etc. and if so suggestions

A search and reading of threads on alarm system it seems that 5 in succession "key" turns in driver door will disengage alarm? Did I read that right

Open to other Advice.

See in other thread you have a 1996

If its same as 1998 its a 2 button remote and needs program by a shop with rover scanner

Iirc working key in drivers door lock can also turn alarm on off

If the ecm has got wet it causes lots of issues, it is on back of pass wheel well and wheel well rotts out

I believe key in drivers door and the ignition will disable the alarm.
The fob should be easy to replace since it doesn't use encryption with a factory-controlled key. It's easy to make a new one, but not very secure.

The whole thing is insecure. The control rods for the door locks are only protected by a thin aluminum skin. I've had steel door skins pierced to pull the control rods on other vehicles. The ignition lock comes off with a quick hand rip of the plastic shield and a chisel blows to the two screws that hold it onto the column.

I didn't fully understand what you wrote about the key not working well.

In my mind, the best thing to do is make it easy for yourself. On-off switch, push button for the starter, and you're good to go. I never worry about it. The Jeep guys are even less secure without any doors or windows, and if anybody makes off with my Rover, the laugh will be on them. I'd love to see how far they make it. Most people can't even figure out how to turn it on. It's a good thing, because they won't want to find out that it doesn't have anything like what they'd call brakes.

Don't care about security. It's a Rusty ol' fella no one will want. Would rather disable it if possible. My concern is avoiding whatever PITA problems that could arise not having a FOB if one can't disable the Alarm.

Key when fully inserted in the ignition won't turn. You have to back it out a smidge to find that magic point on the key's shaft that allows it to turn.

I'm with you there. Friend of mine long ago did this with two switches. the push button crank AND you had to hold the brake pedal down also to engage a second switch. BUT... that car was old enough to not have a steering lock. With that in mind; figure on a Disco you still HAVE to use the key to unlock steering so might as well use it to start her too.

My ignition lock also began to fail. There is a fix in the tech section that addresses the issue I believe you're describing. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ock-fix-35422/

In my case, the key turned freely, but would not move the switch.

The steering lock comes off with two capscrews. To wire a switch, you'll need to identify the correct wires for accessory, on, and start. I did this by simple trial and error, and wired a heavy-duty, high-amp rating switch (simply for durability) and a push-button.

To make it real nice, I would use a split switch like the kind used on aircraft for alt./batt.: CESSNA SPLIT MASTER SWITCH -RED from Aircraft Spruce

With this kind of switch, you can push ignition on and fire the starter button with finger and thumb, and you still have the option to turn the ignition off without also turning accessories off. I have something similar but not quite as nice. I love that I can turn it on and start it with my left hand, while moving it into drive with my right hand.

ok...... seems now the Disco has embolized the car to not start. Is that possible? Alarm was going off. It just spins the engine but no start.

Alarm is now off...... or is it? At least horn is not blasting and lights stopped flashing.

Small red light low center dash is on. Red light around key stays on alllll the time even with key out.

5 times turn of key in door driver door makes no difference but then again the key does not move the lock up and down. The driver door lock and pull handle is fubared. you have to pull the door handle back rapidly about 4 times before door will open. Don't pull it hard.... just quick succession.

Further research shows this Disco is now immobilized by alarm system and wont start due to that. Not sure what to do next

Sounds like you may need to pull the drivers door panel and see what's going on with the drivers lock

try using the key in the door and lock/unlock it about 9 times in a row. that might shut off the disabler (red light) You could try shooting some lubricant in the door lock, and the latch, and the door handle to see if it helps, but you will probably have to take the door apart and find out what is hanging up in there.

Normally the alarm will not allow the starter to turn when it's full on so you have some wiggle room here if starter turns. Try the key lock/unlock five times on drivers door method. If that doesn't work (which it should cuz you don't have a FOB to arm the alarm in hyper *** mode) find out why by removing door panel and look at the lock's micro switch. The drivers door is the only one with that micro switch. If all else fails you can swap out the alarm unit but these days finding a breaker that has one is tough cuz these are getting old as dirt. Will Tillery would be the only guy I can think of that might have one for your year.
