Front Engine cover....remove or not to remove oil pan?
While removing the steering box, I happened to notice a small pool of coolant behind the waterpump (WP). I thought it was the WP or the thermostat housing/hose. But from looking closer, it looks to be coming from the right side of the engine cover, where it meets the block. It looks to be a small hole that coolant is running out of.
So, the RAVE states I just need to remove the two front bolts and loose 4 from the oil pan, then remove the housing. It seems that the steps recommend would causing an oil leak in the future.
I think I should remove the entire pan, then replace the entire gasket...Then for install, the shaft drift pin tool is need...uhhhggg....WTF.
Also, besides the gaskets, crank seal and possible hoses, should I replace any of the bolts?
Anyone have experience?

Remove whole pan, clean screen, be sure pickup is not loose. Inspect. See https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...highlight=pump for what it will look like under cover, oil pump, timing chain (Spike had a replacement for $30 I think that he mentioned), and water pump come to mind as other things to make it an exciting weekend of grease, grime, and liquid refreshment.
I believe that "Q" from the James Bond series probably had a hand in Rover design, something along the lines of that Aston Martin that could squirt an oil slick to evade evildoers in "Goldfinger"... it's a good thing the rear door open to the side, makes it easier to load the weekly case of oil and various fluids.
I would remove the entire pan. The front cover isn't very hard. If you take the radiator out it is a lot easier. But I suppose you don't have to if you don't want to. I would also replace the oil pump and put a new timing chain on it while your in there!
BE " pro-active" remove the pan & pickup---clean and reseal it, new crank seal, frt cover gasket,timing chain & gears, water pump gasket, check the oil pump while you are there....you wont regret the little extra time and $. If the budget allows, now would be a good time to replace the oil cooler hoses( if you have them)...sooner or later they WILL leak.
Wheel, how many miles on the engine? Does it look like the WP has ever been replaced? If not tread carefully, the 2 long bolts on the RH side of the pump go directly through the timing chain cover and into the block. They frequently become frozen and are a complete PITA to remove, especially if you snap the head of the bolt, like I did. But yes, RnR everything, the rad is easily removed and when done, makes everything easier to get to.

The engine has 117k and, what looks to be the original WP. IT is quiet and turns smoothly. My plan was to leave the pump attached to the housing, removing those specific bolts that run to the block.
Well, I will need to order the pan gasket also. Oil pump and timing chain?...hummm...I'll look into those also. I recently replaced the lower oil line, and just bought the upper, which is ready to go. Just need to replace the o-rings on the lower again...which I have.
Cheap insurance to change out the WP when you're that far into it. Mine went from fine, slight wobble then bang, gone. Rock auto has them for $46 with gasket. Order a new bolt kit too, AB had the complete set for ten bucks I think.
My budget is shot again this month...and we all miss driving in the Disco..
