Default Gas

Is there anyway I can run regular unleaded in my disco using octane boost (some stations around here tend to run out of premium quite often) or is it just best to stick with Premium.

Also my dad says I could fill up with regular gas and then throw a bottle of rubbing alcohol and it does the same thing as a octane booster.

First, it is cheaper to run 91 plus octane then to buy regular and throw in a $10 bottle of octane booster.
As for your dad's suggestion, don't take this wrong, but he is so far off base.

Sorry but your dad is dead wrong, and octane booster in the bottle actually LOWERS octane.
Not to mention if we do the math...
20 gal of regular at $3.30 per gal is $66.
20 gal of premium at $3.50 per gal is $70.
That is a difference of $4.
How much is a bottle of octane booster again? Less than $4? Or more than $4 dollars?
How much fuel does one bottle of octane booster treat?

As for the alcohol thing...they already add 10% ethanol to the gas, which does NOT raise the octane level but it does lower your MPG.
Increasing the alcohol level beyond 10% will eat your O-rings and seals in your fuel system because it was not designed to work with that much alcohol.

If they keep running out of premium fuel you need to buy your push water elsewhere.

E85 has an octane rating of about about 96-105 dpeneding on which method you use. Most the the engine builders around here are building around the use of e85. The 1000+hp turbo supra street car uses E85 only.

the only reason I can think our motors need higher octane is because of the ignition advance that our systems use. I am still shocked at the ign adv. I see on the ultra gauge. 47is what i have noticed.

In my area a few dealers carry premium gas with no ethanol added. The bass boat guys really like it.

I either get Shell 93 or Sunoco 93. Get in that habit with whatever is near you, but avoid the 87 or 89 by all means.

I must ask, have any of you guys seen any damage to motors or less HP due to 87-89 octane fuel? Frankly I have never seen a single thing in any motor ever unless it was related to NOS or a modified car.

I'm not saying to put alcohol in your tank but in theory your dad is correct alcohol does raise the octane rating of gas. Do a Wikipedia search on octane.
