Good deal or just a "head"ache??

Okay, ran out today to see what goodies I could find on the "parting out Discovery I W/"new heads"" I found on Craigslist. Well, it had some really good parts on it, and of course I neither brought the tools or had the time to get everything I wanted, so there's a trip back in my near future. Now the dilemma... There were some new looking heads (seller wants $500, but I would more than likely walk at half that price for both), but the owner of the vehicle had left it at the shop when he found out the "mechanic" who installed the heads stripped the head bolts, and after 50 miles of driving after that repair, the motor quit. In looking at the bottom of the heads, you can see three of the cylinders were firing & there's soot, but the last one was clean with an oil & antifreeze residue (no evidence of the cylinder ever firing). The rockers, valves & springs look brand new. My question is, with no documentation, used is used (I get that), but if the "mechanic" stripped the head bolts, and the vehicle was driven, are these heads worth the risk? I am thinking about getting them for a future rebuild project, and they are not a have to have them situation, but I also don't want to be pitching cash on a headache either.

Sounds like a headache, my mechanic sells a pair for 389.00 and 24.00 shipping on ebay. That way you know they are good.
Offer him $100 for both. You should still have them pressure tested and surface decked. Would you really want to build the whole top end($200 in gaskets, Bolts, Etc.) just to find out the heads were not right?
Good luck
