Has anyone done O2 sensors on a 1997 D1
Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil pack and remove it. My coil pack had the connections labeled but be sure to label the wires as well. Then remove the coil pack. Mine came out pretty easy and then you have much easier access to the connections. I was able to remove the sensors without taking anything apart. But it would have been really hard to install with the coil pack not moved out of the way.
Since you replied to this old thread, i thought that Id update on that job. In order to get my hand into a position so that I could plug in the O2 sensor, I ended up having to lay across the engine compartment. this caused me to bend one of the AC evap hoses such that it made contact to the fan belt. Fan belt then chewed a hole in the hose. Had to have a special hose made cause of course they dont make that part any more. spent a weekend recharging the AC, which was fun since I had never done it. 3 months later my son tried to pull the battery, crossed the battery to the frame using a box wrench. guess where the arc exited.....thasts right, the fu*king AC hose. I cant win with this car

Just say this post. I replaced 02 sensors a few years ago after reading post that it could be done without removing anything. For me this info was so misleading. In the end I too had to position myself across the engine compartment. I needed to remove the coil pack. This was going to take as long as it was going to take. It was such an annoying process I recall asking people on the forum about relocating the coil pack so that replacing the 02 sensors would be easier in the future. Sadly I was nearly laughed under the table as many mentioned it was a D2 mod and not a D1. A lot of automotive engineering is surprising when it works, the pisser is when it breaks and it doesn't make sense to repair it the same exact way.

Something to take note: If a guy's head gaskets have been bad for a bit, it usually kills the cats and causes a CE light. Replacing the O2's to eliminate the CE light in such a circumstance is just a waste of money (w/o replacing worn cats). But of course fix the H/G issue first ...if your rig needs them.
Put another way: If an owner senses his H/G's going bad, replace them ASAP ...before it kills the cats. Save some exh work/espense.
