For those who do not know. WOT is Wide Open Throttle.
Basically I am driving along. I drop the gas to pass someone.
If I really need to go I dump the pedal all the way to the floor and
feel that little switch kick in on the floor. Maybe it is something in
the engine throttle. Either way I noticed the other night that I am
dumping ALOT of black smoke, or Carbon out my tailpipe when this happens.

Anyone else noticed this? I suspect my vacuum advance is not working
or my air way is clogged. I know it is supposed to dump fuel but it does
not take off like it is dumping fuel. It kind of studders instead and
emits alot of smoke... I let off and just slowly press the fuel to the
floor and it takes off just fine. I am geussing that LR did not design
this to react this way.

Drives fine otherwise. Fuel economy is around 17-18 in the city.

 

How long since you changed your t-stat?

You realize you are driving a underpowered 4500lb brick right?
If I need to pass someone I manually down shift to 3rd, then once the RPM come up I gas it, alot more effective in my opinion.
I would have to say it is something with your ignition timing, its not adjusting to all the extra load on the engine and the black smoke is just partially burned fuel being dumped out the tailpipe.

 

You might want to get your truck on a scope and see what your timing is doing, it is pretty common to have those old distributors lock up and or quit when it comes to the advance, they are supposed to be cleaned and lube on a regular basis.

 

yeah i bet your timing is off as well...distributors require a little more up keep....you should convert to chevy hei if you can...little more reliable and cheaper parts..i think someone here has done that conversion..check spark plugs too to make sure they are not too sooty
