Is this heavy damage? And what color is this?

It's a 97 with a 5 speed. 550$
I'm guessing there are no body panels that will bolt on in that area and will require cutting and welding?
It runs? Offer him 500$ and run with it!
And cut it up and do illegal things with it..
I wish I could find something like that.. I could think of some pretty stupid things to do to it..

Give him $500 and drive away as fast as you can.
A body shop can repair that for another $500, and as for the color? Who cares? paint it Camel Trophy colors, paint it pink, its a 5 speed man!! Rare for the US.

I would love to have it. Bob that tail end , there's several if do a search. That would make a nice cut down job. Then Zebra stripe it right on top of that aquamarine.
Or another roll or 2 of heavy duty duck tape should close it up pretty good..............

You can unscrew and pop the welds for the rear pieces that house the tail lights. Then you can see where you can cut to remove the panel with the window. Find that panel from a D1 in a junk yard and epoxy it back in, then find the rear panels from a D2 and swap them in. You will have a D1 with tail lights from a D2. It can be done and re-sprayed for less than $1K... I thought about this long and hard on my 96. The rear is worse than that. But for $500......Don't pass it up. I paid that for mine and the tranny was toast. Well, I backed it on the trailer...
