Default Help with oil change

Hi all,

Just bought a '95 Disco. Love it so far, but it needs a lot of work. Started off with an oil change, but I've hit a roadblock already. I can't fit a socket on the oil drain plug, as the exhaust is in the way. It's just a Kobalt 1&1/8" socket and a 1/2" drive ratchet.

This is the smallest socket I could find, at least locally. Is this normal spacing between the pan and exhaust?

Also, any tips for getting the plug off? I tried it with an adjustable wrench, and it seems to be welded on there.

Yes, that's the normal spacing between the pan and exhaust. Fine Rover engineering.

A 1 1/8" open/box wrench will fit perfect. Avoid the adjustable wrench especially if the plug is stuck... you will round off the plug head. The leverage from a 1 1/8" wrench should be all you need to remove the plug .....BUT....

As for the plug being stuck, once you have a proper wrench ready, hit the plug with a propane torch. You will only need to do this for a few minutes and the heat from a propane torch is all you need. Good Luck!

>> Home Depot has a Husky 1 1/8" (Model HCW118/ SKU 618782) for only $9.49

Thank you! I actually went and picked up that behemoth of a wrench, and with a bit of tugging, got it right off. Oil change done! Thanks again!

Glad you got it sorted! It's true that is one Big A$$ Wrench.

If you didn't already, then next oil change be sure to get a new oil drain plug and washer Grab a few washers because it's a good idea to change them with every oil change.

They don't cost much and you can get them from L8, AB, RN, Rovahfarm, or any LR parts supplier.
Just search the part numbers in the pic.
